The baseline schedule
Twice a year works for most homes here: once in late autumn after leaves have finished dropping, and once in spring after pollen, seed pods and blossom debris have come down.
Homes with mature trees directly overhead often need three or four visits. Homes on open lots with no overhang can sometimes stretch to once a year.
Signs you are already overdue
Water spilling over the edge during rain rather than running to the downspout. Plants growing out of the gutter, which means the debris has been there long enough to hold soil. Staining or streaking down the fascia. Gutters visibly sagging or pulling away from the roofline. Pooling water beside the foundation after a storm.
Any one of these means it has been too long.
Why downspouts are the real problem
Clearing the gutter trough is the visible half of the job. Blockages in the downspout are what actually cause overflow, and they are invisible from the ground and from a ladder alike.
This is why debris should be removed by hand rather than blown along the trough, which just relocates the clog into the downspout. Every downspout should be flushed and confirmed running clear before the job is called done.
What a blockage costs you
Overflowing gutters send water down the wall and against the foundation. In the Mid-South that means stained siding, rotting fascia, saturated beds, and in bad cases water finding its way into a crawlspace. Fascia replacement costs many times what regular clearing does.
Are gutter guards worth it
On tree-heavy lots, yes, in the sense that they meaningfully reduce how often clearing is needed. They do not eliminate maintenance, and any product marketed as never needing attention again is overselling. Fine debris still accumulates and guards themselves need occasional clearing.
