## Driveway Stains: What Comes Out and What Doesn't

Some stains vanish, some fade, and some are part of the slab now. Knowing which is which before you book saves disappointment.

## Comes out almost completely

Algae and organic growth. The green in the shaded strips. Comes out entirely with the right solution and dwell time.
General traffic grime and the grey film. The gradual accumulation most people stop noticing. Removes fully.
Leaf and tannin staining. The brown outlines left by wet leaves sitting through autumn. Usually removes fully, occasionally leaves a faint ghost on very porous concrete.
Mud, clay and general dirt. Straightforward.

## Usually lightens substantially

Tire marks. The dark scuffing where cars turn. Typically improves a great deal, sometimes not entirely on rough-finished concrete.
Surface oil, recent. A fresh drip treated with degreaser usually comes out. The longer it has sat, the deeper it has migrated.
Rust from furniture feet or fertilizer. Responds to a dedicated rust treatment rather than pressure alone. Light rust often clears, heavy rust lightens.
Efflorescence, the white chalky bloom. Improves, though it can return since it comes from within the slab.

## Rarely comes out

Deep oil saturation. Years of dripping in the same spot means oil has soaked well into the slab. Expect meaningful lightening, not disappearance.
Paint spills that have cured into the surface.
Concrete discoloration from a bad pour, or where a section has been patched. That is the concrete's actual color, not a stain sitting on it.
Etching and acid damage. The surface is physically altered. Nothing on top of it is coming off because there is nothing on top of it.

## Why an honest answer up front matters

The tempting move for a contractor is to promise everything comes out, take the job and let the customer discover otherwise. We would rather flag it when quoting, because the alternative is an unhappy walkthrough and a satisfaction claim we cannot resolve.
If you send photos, we will tell you which category your stains fall into before you commit.

## Worth knowing about sealing

Sealing after cleaning slows how quickly new staining penetrates, which is worth considering on a driveway that has just been restored. It is not permanent and needs reapplication every few years. It also will not hide anything that did not come out, so clean first and decide after seeing the result.

## Questions

**Q: Can pressure washing remove oil stains from a driveway?**
Fresh surface oil usually comes out with a degreaser. Oil that has soaked in over years typically lightens substantially rather than disappearing.

**Q: Will rust stains come off concrete?**
Light rust often clears with a dedicated rust treatment. Heavy or long-standing rust usually lightens rather than fully lifting.

**Q: Why is part of my driveway a different color after cleaning?**
Usually the underlying concrete differs, from a patch, a separate pour or previous etching. Cleaning reveals it rather than causing it.
